Bases from Iron and Stone

The visual impact of many of the pieces is improved by placing them on a plinth or pedestal.

In general, all pieces are drilled and supplied with a 1/2" diameter stainless steel pin.

This allows them to be firmly placed on plinths, pedestals, walls and decking, providing extra stability for small or tall and narrow pieces. The stainless steel pin will not rust.

Secure Fixing to Walls and Pedestals

If extra security is required, such as in gardens where thefts may occur. A very effective technique is to glue the sculpture to a fixed base or pedestal using a clear silicon sealant, available from all hardware stores.

As an alternative Iron and Stone can drill the base of the sculpture and chemically bond a 10mm stainless steel bolt into the stone.

The protruding bolt can then be fixed by the customer to their own plinth, pedestal or decking.

A range of appropriate plinths are available at many garden centres.

Stone Bases

Iron and Stone provide Cotswald Stone bases. The fresh cut limestone varies from cream to the classic honey coloured Cotswold Stone, and when outside, gradually weathers to a paler shade of cream.

We use a three inch thick block, hand cut to a standard nine by nine inch or twelve by twelve inch square base (8cm by 23 x 23cm or 32 x 32cm).

Felt can be fixed to the bottom of stone bases for indoor use. The sculpture and the stone base are joined with a removable stainless steel pin.

Wooden Bases
Iron and Stone can provide a range of wooden bases, cut from locally procured logs.

We can supply three inch slices of trunk, available from some garden centres as "stepping stones", to add a little emphasis or to stabilise sculptures.

We also supply lengths of trunk or trunk "pedestals" to change the perspective and add emphasis to smaller pieces.

Costs of Bases and Fixings
The cost of drilling and fixing a bolt to the bottom of a sculpture to allow secure fitting to a customers own pedestal or wall is £10.

The cost of providing a nine by nine inch Cotswold Stone base, a stainless steel pin and drilling the sculpture is £25, the cost for a twelve by twelve inch base is £35.

Wooden bases are individually priced, but with fitting start at £20.

We can also provide marble bases and plinths and pedestals materials.
